History of the Zittau Mountain Run
Together through the mountains – Running & Hiking
The history of the Zittau Mountain Run began in 1974 when it was established as a long-distance hike by the Zittau district committee of the German Hiking and Mountaineering Association (DWBO). At the time, hardly anyone suspected the popularity this event would one day enjoy. Initially, two routes were offered, which participants tackled under the motto "Everyone as they wish and are able." During these years, the run, now called the Zittau Mountain Run, reached its record participation with approximately 4,500 runners and hikers. The starting point had long since moved from its first location in Zittau on Hochwaldstraße to the much larger sports center of the former VEB Lautex on Willi-Gall-Straße. Due to the location of this sports center, the first five kilometers through the village of Olbersdorf were on paved roads. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, a completely new concept for the run became necessary. From then on, the public swimming pool and sports complex in Olbersdorf at the foot of the Zittau Mountains were used. The district sports association found true allies in the members of TSG Olbersdorf. Runners and hikers start at the Olbersdorf stadium with a wonderful view of the Zittau Mountains and can enjoy the beauty of this mountain landscape along the varied routes throughout the entire race. These special features and the excellent organization directly contributed to the Zittau Mountain Run and Hike being ranked among the ten most popular races in Germany by the magazine "Laufzeit" in 1997. A festive atmosphere at the start and finish in Olbersdorf, and enthusiasm everywhere along the routes through the Zittau Mountains, have always defined the atmosphere of this event. The Upper Lusatian District Sports Association, together with the ZGLW organizing committee and numerous helpers and sponsors, has succeeded in organizing a sports and community festival that meets all expectations. Whether for competitive runners or casual hikers, whether with a club, as a family, or solo – the trails and landscapes of the Zittau Mountains have something for everyone. The organizers and numerous volunteers hope that participants and guests feel comfortable in Zittau and the Zittau Mountains, spreading the word about hiking and running far beyond the borders of Upper Lusatia and encouraging them to return.
